11/07/24: Club Cars – Twitchy Finger

Twitchy Finger.

“You ask, we listen” has always been the guiding principle behind the way the club is run at Molesey. It doesn’t mean the bods in charge will take the slightest bit of notice, but hey, they listened, right? It’s called democracy, Molesey style. Stalin would have felt right at home.

And so it was this glorious summer’s evening, when the RevoSlot Toyota Supras were nailed back together and lined up for another frenetic evening of all-action racing. “Do you want to use track calls this evening, gents?” asked Neil, alluding to the shenanigans and flared tempers of the previous week, when track calls had been highly controversial. “No, not unless there’s a major pile-up involving loads of cars” was the consensus. Good. That’s nice and clear. If nothing else, the poor sod operating the track call button would have a week free of relentless abuse.

No prizes for guessing what happened next.

Group 1, heat 1, lap 1. Alex and Terry crashed harmlessly at the end of the main straight, Neil hit the track call button and those not caught up in the crash howled with complaint. So much for no track calls. Neil’s lightning-fast track call finger just couldn’t help itself. Or it’s got Parkinson’s. Either way, tempers rose, and the drivers who owned those tempers hadn’t even completed one lap. Stalin would have had them executed for contempt, but Molesey’s membership isn’t vast, so killing off four of them in one hit was deemed unwise.

After that, the atmosphere calmed down significantly, at least until halfway through group 1’s final heat. Julian and Simon were safely on their way to first and second overall, but Alex and Terry were locked in battle for 3rd place, separated by less than a second, with David a couple of seconds further back. Alex crashed, followed shortly after by Terry. Neil’s finger twitched, and bang, we had another track call, this time robbing David of what he claimed was his chance to take 3rd. Cue more howls of protest about track calls.

He’s a glutton for punishment, that Neil, that’s for sure.
