23/01/20: NSR Classic – Sensitivity

Sensitivity.

I wonder what a fly on the wall would make of a Molesey race night? If he survived Josh’s attempts at asphyxiation, I think he’d end the night thoroughly confused. Skilled slot car racers need to be sensitive, right?

First we had Frank, who’d returned with his new squeeze and was robustly insisting that despite advice to the contrary, two fingers were definitely better than one. Brute force over sensitivity. Then we had Ed sharing his wisdom about the need to handle controllers sensitively, just like you would grease-nipples, or something…

Next there was Graham, serenely driving someone else’s car for a couple of laps, oblivious to his own being repeatedly crashed and reslotted. Then came Vince, unwittingly driving an entire heat using Ed’s controller instead of his own. Sensitive? Tonight, this lot were about as sensitive as a sledgehammer.

Amazingly, given the dire sensitivity on display, the racing was excellent. With Julian absent, Josh was untroubled at the front, but still managed a couple of offs. David and Ed were neck and neck at times, but Ed’s habit of throwing in a handful of unforced errors cost him dearly. Graham and Neil battled all night long, finishing just 1.2 seconds apart, but closest result of the evening was Vince edging out Frank by a mere 0.2 seconds after 90 laps.

Sensitive drivers or not, NSR Classics again proved a success. With an encouragingly healthy turnout of eleven drivers, this was a great night’s racing.
