02/03/23: Sideways GT3 – No Numbers?!

No Numbers?!

Yet again your correspondent was broken and missed the race, so news about this week’s Sideways GT3 event is once more a badly decoded version of the info provided by the club’s resident spy, padded out with a bit of waffle and a whinge about numbers.

Facts first. Julian won, but it wasn’t anywhere near to being the easy win of last week. Oh no. This time Lee turned up, wheeled out a brand new Lexus RC F GT3 and gave Julian something to think about.

Lee’s downfall – because, let’s face it, he didn’t win – was that he’d dressed his car up as a road car, not a racing car. No stickers, no sponsor logos, no fancy paint scheme and, the most heinous of racing crimes, no race numbers. Everybody knows that racing numbers are worth at least a tenth per lap, so that’s nine seconds that Lee threw away, and all for the sake of a drop of paint. Costly. Very very costly.

Ed was on day release from gritting and used his freedom to turn up and grab third place, although he was a long way behind Lee, while Terry, Graham, Alex, the Tomster and Neil fought for the midfield honours.

The highlight of the race was apparently Dexter’s car being launched off the track’s retaining wall, hitting the clubroom wall, then the floor, then being trodden on and bent by Lee. It’s an unusual way to make newcomers feel welcome at the club, but Dexter and his dad keep coming back, so maybe Lee’s hit on a winning formula: no numbers and big feet.
