06/04/23: Formula 1 – Big Helmets Rule!

Big Helmets Rule!

Oh yes! The reign of the small helmet is over!

It’s been a slow and painful journey to reach this point, but at long last the NSR dwarf’s ridiculous deformed helmet is extinct, on Molesey’s podium at least. This week and for the first time in F1, all three of the podium’s steps were occupied by cars whose drivers were sporting big helmets*. Rejoice! What’s more, every car featured race numbers too. Double rejoice!

It was always going to be a struggle to match last week’s impressive fifteen-car grid, but nonetheless this week’s wasn’t much less impressive, fourteen drivers turning up to race, amongst them a returning Josh, back after a couple of months away nursing a dodgy trigger finger.

The race itself wasn’t an edge-of-your-seat nail-biter, but it had its moments. Julian took a fairly comfortable win despite a lacklustre first heat which saw him finish fourth. Josh, still resting his favoured right-hand trigger finger and consequently driving left-handed instead, took second, while David, whose campaign to make big helmets and race numbers compulsory has so far been a dismal failure, took third.

Alex’s race was a disaster from lap one, a braid problem seeing him finish heat 1 so far behind everyone else that any chance of a half-decent result was gone. Newcomer Chris continued his gradual improvement and won a heat for the first time, while the ongoing father-son battle between Mark and Dexter, which stood at 6 to 3 in Dexter’s favour after last week’s race, saw dad beat son to close the gap to 6 to 4.

But really, who cares who beat who or who won what? There was only one story this week; helmets. Big ones rule!

* Ok, ok. I know. Josh’s helmet is of the Lexan variety so perhaps should be disqualified on a technicality, but it’s the size that matters, not what it’s made of, and it’s big. End of!
