Crash Fest.
Should have been NSR Classics tonight, but with several drivers absent, running our usual race format was a non-starter. Instead, the six drivers that did arrive spent the evening mickey-taking and racing impromptu crash’n’burn time trials using each other’s cars and controllers.
Our eclectic grid comprised:
- Frank’s Porsche 917 K.
- David’s P68.
- A clapped-out Slot.it Group C car found at the bottom of a box.
- Godzilla, Graham’s evil-handling Slot.it Audi R8C.
- Terry’s AllSlotCar F1 with most of its body missing and the remainder seemingly assembled with all the finesse of the aforementioned Godzilla.
One lap for warm-up, then five timed laps to record their fastest lap. Five laps were plenty, as most of us failed to complete five without crashing. Some couldn’t even manage one…
This proved four things:
- Frank’s Porsche 917 K is actually pretty good.
- Lee gets frustrated really easily.
- Building an AllSlotCar F1 needs more than a hammer and blind faith.
- We’d love more members.
If – and I concede that it’s a pretty big if – you’re reading this and haven’t raced at Molesey, you’re missing out and really should make the effort to visit us. As our impromptu evening proved, messing about with slot cars on a superb track in a nice warm clubroom with a group of like-minded mates is a great way to spend an evening. Racing them is even better. Better still, all you need is enthusiasm. Go on, come and join us.
No results to post, so instead here’s some evocative history from Scalextric’s 1964 catalogue, when karts were called go-karts and it wasn’t all about cars.
